Flavored Water For Intermittent Fasting

We’ve talked a lot about the different types of drinks you can have while you’re on a intermittent fast.

From water, coffee, and Amla Green Tea to soups and broths, you have many different options when it comes to maintaining proper hydration during your fast.

What about flavored water?   Can you have flavored water during your fast?

To get to the point quickly, some flavored water does meet the criteria for intermittent fasting…

… and some do not!  So choosing your flavored water wisely could either make or break your fast.


Steadfast Diet Rules For Intermittent Fasting

In order to stay in a fasted state, you need maintain a low level of calories.  Anything above 50 calories may stimulate your liver and move you from a fasting state to a fed state.

This is why anything you consume—either clear fluids or flavored waters—should contain as little calories as possible.

The reason is simple: When you’re in a fasted state, insulin levels fall, requiring your body to use stored energy in your liver and your body fat.

In a fed state, where you’re getting your energy from food, insulin levels are high in order to process the foods you’re eating.

The high insulin levels during this stage, shuts down your ability to use stored energy from your liver and body fat.

Some flavored waters contain sugar and many are over 50 calories, which stimulates your liver and starts a chain reaction that eventually leads to the release of insulin from your pancreas.

This shifts your body out of a fasted state and into a fed state, shutting down any benefits you may get from your fast.

One of the main reasons why people start intermittent fasting (as a way to lose weight) may be to reset their bodies and to try to kick the sugar habit.

This is vitally important to your overall success while intermittent fasting since sugar may have a strong addictive grasp on your body and mind.

Cutting back on sweet things, like sugar-sweetened or even artificially-sweetened beverages, would be ideal to ensure success during your fast.

And since some flavored waters do contain over 50 calories, they may not fit into your intermittent fasting plans, while some others might.


Intermittent Fasting For Diet & Weight Loss

If you’re out to lose weight, then fasting may be a great option.  It makes eating very simple, since all your meals are structured outside your fasting window and inside your feeding window.

Intermittent fasting makes sticking to your weight loss program that much easier because of the simplicity of the intermittent fasting approach.

One reason why intermittent fasting is great for weight loss is because of the limited time you have to eat during your feeding window.

This smaller feeding window makes it easier for you to consume fewer calories, therefore stimulating your body to use more of its stored energy.

But, as we have mentioned before, it’s important that you keep from eating or driming calories during your fasting window.

Anything above 50 calories (or more), may cause an increase in insulin production, therefore shifting your body to using the calories you’ve just consumed—instead of the stored calories you have in your liver and body fat stores.

You should keep calorie-filled drinks to a minimum during your fasting window.

Intermittent Fasting With Flavored Water

As previously mentioned, there are some flavored waters that may not break your fast, but there are definitely some that do.

Any type of flavored water that contains calories or dextrose, may potentially have an influence on blood sugar and insulin levels, therefore these waters will shift you from a fasted to a fed state.

Some people may ask about lemon water or water infused with fruits, berries, and cucumber.  If the calories are below 50, then they may be a safe bet.

However, fruit and lemon juice DO contain calories, therefore it may actually shift your body from the fasted state you want to be in, to a non-fasted, or fed state, therefore breaking your fast.

What about flavored waters with artificial sweeteners?  The jury is still out on artificial sweeteners. Even though artificial sweeteners contain zero calories, some may stimulate insulin production, which results in a break from your fast.

If you find it difficult to consume plain water, you may use sparkling water (such as carbonated water) that contains zero calories or artificial sweeteners.


If you find that drinking water is not enough, and you need something more during your fast, then including unsweetened Amla Green Tea would be great option.

Plus, one of the reasons why you fast is to cut added sugar from your life, which could help stabilize blood sugar levels.


The best advice:

Stick with plain water.  That way you know that you’re drinking something with zero calories and you can guarantee that you’re not going to break your fast.
