Can You Drink Coffee While Intermittent Fasting?

Thinking about doing an intermittent fasting plan, but don’t quite know all the nuts and bolts?  Wondering what you can have…and what’s forbidden?

Well, you’re not the only one!  There are thousands (if not hundreds of thousands) of people just like you, who are struggling to understand the basics when it comes to intermittent fasting.

For example, one question that routinely comes up is…

Can you drink coffee while intermittent fasting? 

Before you get the answer to that question, let’s figure out why you’re doing an intermittent fast in the first place.

Now, most people who do a fast do it to lose weight.  They want to transform their bodies from where they are now…

…to a “new” body that they can be proud of!  And since the intermittent fasting approach may do wonders for your weight loss…it’s no wonder why people do it.

The other reason why someone should fast is to give their body a chance to heal and recover.  That means giving it ample time to repair damaged cells…cleanse the body of toxins…reduce chronic and deadly inflammation…and prevent many chronic diseases that could prematurely end your life.

So when it comes to topic of what you should be drinking while intermittent fasting, some things may or may not be allowed.

The RIGHT Drinks For Intermittent Fasting

Intermittent fasting is the process of voluntarily depriving yourself of the one thing that makes EVERYONE happy—FOOD.

And it’s not like you’re skipping it for a few hours—most fasting plans may last 8, 12, 16…even 72 hours if you’re really daring.

But that doesn’t mean you can’t have ANYTHING during your fasting plan.

In order to stay in the fasting window, you need to keep your caloric intake under 50 calories.  This will ensure your body is still using fat stores for energy, and not relying on your liver to release sugar.

That’s why it’s HIGHLY recommended that anything over 50 calories be avoided—or your fast is over, and you’re going to lose any benefits.

That’s why sticking to low-calorie drink options will help you on your fasting journey.

Those drinks may include:

• Water—this hydrating drink should be included during your fast.  Besides the hydrating component to water, it may provide a feeling of fullness, therefore keeping hunger and cravings at bay.

• Tea—if you want to take your intermittent fast to the next level, then including tea with your plan is the answer.  Packed with plenty of antioxidant power, teas may curb your appetite and increase your metabolic rate. That, however, brings us to the topic of coffee…

Can You Drink Coffee While Intermittent Fasting?

There are a lot of things that you may be able to avoid for a certain amount of time.  But coffee may not be one of them.

And that is why many people ask if you can drink coffee while intermittent fasting. 

I am happy to say that you CAN—but with some modifications.

You see, coffee can be a very healthy beverage.  It contains potent vitamins and minerals that could improve your health and add benefits to your body.


When it comes to intermittent fasting, you need to be sure that you’re drinking it black—with no additives, like cream, sugar, honey, or artificial sweeteners.

Remember, during your “fasting” window, you need to be sure that anything you eat or drink (in this case) is under 50 calories.

Anything over 50 calories could kick your liver into gear, therefore turning your body from a fat-burning machine…

…to a sugar burning (and storing) machine!  This could ruin any additional benefits you may see from your intermittent fasting plan.

That’s why eliminating cream, sugar, and other additives would make your coffee fit into your plan.


There are other issues to consider before adding coffee while you’re fasting.

Drinking coffee on an empty stomach may lead to other health conditions.  For one, it may increase the production of acid that could eat away at your stomach lining.

And, without food to help soften the caffeinated blow, you may have jitters, cold sweats, increased heart rate, higher blood pressure, anxiety, and changes in your mood.

So, if you’re considering starting an intermittent fasting plan, but can’t give up a good cup of Joe, you may want to look for other alternatives or waiting until your fasting window is over.

Can You Drink Coffee While Intermittent Fasting?

Intermittent fasting is the hottest way to lose weight, get in shape, detox your body, reduce inflammation, and keep diseases, like heart disease and diabetes, at bay.

But, like any fasting plan, you need to be careful of anything that you eat and drink, as it may kick you out of the fasted state.

This often brings up the question of drinking coffee while intermittent fasting.  And while it may be good to include during you fast, you need to be sure that you’re drinking it au natural—without any added cream, sugar, or additives.


You do need to consider that drinking coffee on an empty stomach—even decaf coffee—could increase the production of acid, which could damage your stomach lining.

And, drinking coffee on an empty stomach has been linked to high blood pressure, increased heart rate, anxiety, and other unpleasant side effects.

Not only could this lead to jitters and a shaky feeling…it could ruin your intermittent fasting window quickly.

The best advice: If you want to stay hydrated—and keep your body in the fasted state—then you should stick to plain, old water.
